Deltron 3742 is a sequel to DJ Nerd42's "Chrono Tied" (2009) which combines the lyrics of Deltron 3030 (2000) over beats made from sampling the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack. (1997) The album explores the concept of a dystopian future (much like the game does) from the point of view of an underground resistance fighter named Deltron Zero. So Guitar Hero has had enormous success –we didn’t start the company that made Guitar Hero, we bought it after it started, it put the first one in the marketplace. We had a view that this was something that had much more broad appeal, and that because it’s a manufactured product, being efficient in the supply chain could get the manufacturing costs down. We thought our relationships with the music companies would be more valuable than a small startup company could ever develop on their own. So we bought the company, and after a few iterations of the game it became one of the most successful games of all time.

And then we didn’t really take the time that we usually take to understand audience behavior. It was one of those things where we were resting on the idea that one of the essential fantasies of video games is to unleash your inner rock star. And it didn’t really matter how you did that, but as long as you were allowing people to unleash their inner rock star fantasies, you’d continue to be successful. So we went off on a passion project that had a point of differentiation –which is called DJ Hero.

And in hindsight, if you step back –and it really would have been a simple thing to do– we should have said, ‘Well, how many people really want to unleash their inner DJ?’ And then out of the people who do want to unleash their inner DJ, how many want to do it in the context of a game where you earn points, versus just taking a DJ deck or tools on their Macintosh and actually being a DJ? And it turns out it’s a very small market.

That pretty much vindicates everything I've said about DJ Hero and how fake and useless it is. People don't want fake DJing the way they want to air guitar, they want real DJing. And you can only do that without asking permission, without having a licensed game with samples all lined up for you, but by putting real creativity into the mix. The best sample usage is based on totally unlicensed, lawyer-free open creativity. That is the kind of culture that we want to build, not one where this fake sterilized plastic toy is presented to us as the corporate approved way to play. We decide, we choose samples, we remix. Like the hokey-pokey, that's what it's all about.

This track was on my 2010 mixtape, "It's Pronounced Forty Two" and the synchronized music video for it is just way overdue. In my defense, KJ didn't actually release the Headline News music video until long after It's Pronounced Forty Two was already out. Still, better late than never.

In order to get this to work properly I had to create an alternative mix of "Headline News" to match the video's song structure, and I added a cool running-down effect on the end.

Moar Chrono Trigger Stuff For Great Justice

OK so last semester was really tough and ever since I pretty much finished making my definitive statement about Chrono Trigger in 2009 which you can use as an alternative soundtrack to the game if you want, I haven't been keeping up with things in the Chrono Trigger world as much as I used to.

Apparently, the final, final, no really final release version of Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes (better than the earlier leaked 98% patch) leaked back in January while I wasn't paying attention. Also, another CT hack called "Flames of Eternity" has been ignited. Keep that fire burnin, Metronome Project!!

I really appreciated my Christmas present six months ago and now I am just waiting for a patch that enables me to save Aerith.

BTW on an unrelated note, the Alpocalypse is upon us.

This one's been no my computer for a while and it basically answers the question, "What if Shael Riley was produced by Mike E. Clark?"

The original mix was in a major key and I switched to relative minor with Melodyne and a vocoder and gave it that haunted circus vibe with the "oom pah pah, oom pah pah" calliope sound. I think the way I turned the rapping into singing with the vocoder was particularly clever.

It's a Decemberween Mackerel! HomestarRunner.com has a new cartoon!

What's miraculous about that you say? Don't they have new cartoons all the time? After all, they're an Internet cartoon site. It's what they do.

But in this case, it really is something to talk about, because they've been missing in action for more than a year, except for two or three intermittent odd appearances. Is this a positive sign of the future or just a random fluke that they had mostly finished from last year and didn't bother to post till now? Only time will tell. I, for one, will be closely watching their RSS feed in the days to come in order to find out.

Here's hoping they get this WWW dot show, back on the road dot com!

Oh man, between that last post and this post I'm getting way too egotistical LOL.

Some guy on Newgrounds took the "Canadian Chocobo" mashup concept where I put the vocals from Weird Al's Green Day parody, "Canadian Idiot" over the Chocobo Song from Final Fantasy, and replaced Weird Al with the original Green Day vocals. Be warned, there are some swears in it: Here it is.

I would be extremely hypocritical to ever discourage fan creativity and really appreciate what this guy is doing but would also like to make clear that I don't like swears and as a very patriotic conservative United States citizen, I would be very much a part of what Green Day would characterize "the redneck agenda" as the real idiocy in my opinion is often to be found on the political far Left. I'd have thought this would've already been made clear by the strong Pro-Life message in "Complicated Broken People".

In fact, right now I am in the early planning stages of what could become a political/philosophical concept album meant to be done in time for the 2012 Presidential election that expresses some of my conservative views, using tracks like Living Color's "Cult of Personality" to talk about Obaama and Rush's "The Trees" to talk about equality of opportunity over equality of outcome. This would be a sort of response to RIAA's USA which I think suffers from an extreme left-wing political bias. As always, if I ever end up producing this thing, it would be interesting and worth listening to no matter your own political ideology/affiliation as it will have awesome tunes as usual and better than ever.

Right now I'm really busy with college but also hard at work producing the upcoming Daft Punk mixtape. Some of the tracks on it should rock your world for sure, I can listen to the ones finished already on repeat for a long time and that's saying alot cause I can hardly ever stand doing that with any music. THE ROBOTS ARE COMING!!

I will be posting "Dozens, Nay Severals of DJ Nerd42 Fans Can't Be Wrong" on YouTube soon. But odd stuff has been happening with my existing YouTube videos. Today, "A City All In" from "It's Pronounced Forty-Two" has mysteriously reappeared after having been removed by EMI's "Christian Music Group" when tobyMac's "Tonight" came out. (It was first posted shortly after the "City On Our Knees" single came out but before tobyMac's album) I used to have a "copyright strike" on my account associated with it, which is still listed as a strike but is now blanked out. There's still a "Strike 2" but it's now blank. Anyway, it's great that the video is back though the record labels would do better to actually talk to YouTube users directly instead of hiding behind the faceless nameless contact-information-less ContentID system in the first place.

Clicking around in my YouTube account, I looked at the "Insight" page which I think must be very misleading. It indicates that a large percentage of my viewers have been teenage girls between the ages of 13 and 17, which sounds hot, (Illegal but it doesn't feel that long ago that I was 17 myself) but makes me suspicious that my actual viewership may be people have been posing as teenage girls or maybe the darn thing is just broken LOL.

Compilation project delayed due to legal issues

Wouldn't ya know it, the DJ Nerd42 compilation project announced for September 19th has had to be delayed due to trademark infringement threats received from a certain manufacturer of plastic food containers. The project will have to be renamed and reposted with new artwork at some future date. I am quite seriously considering using the name, "Live at the Completely Generic, Non-Trademark Infringing Plastic Container Party."

Compilation project coming soon

Sup, DJ Nerd42 here. I just finished mixing the last track for my upcoming compilation mixtape of random stuff. You could call it a "concept album" only if my back catalog counts as a concept. On it there will be alternate versions of tracks from my first four albums "cOOLdISC_aFTERmATH" (2007), "Canadian Chocobo" (2008), "Chrono Tied" (2009) and "It's Pronounced Forty-Two" (2010).

I can't reveal everything yet because I've got to work out the release date of this thing with the Get Some! Records people but this should be out in the next month or two at the latest. This thing is huge - there are 22 tracks and I may even add a hidden track if I have time before release.

The first five tracks are a re-remix of the first half of Canadian Chocobo, including a new and improved remake of "Daft Wash" that should get a music video at some point. In the early stages I was calling this thing, "Canadian Chocobo Revisited" but that's not the title, and neither is, "The Adventures of DJ Nerd42 on the Mice of Plastic." (a Grandmaster Flash reference I was thinking of using) I'm not revealing the title yet (though I did tell a few people. Hush up, you rascals) but it's going to be funny and random like I was when I first got into this DJing stuff.

On this project, there are some extended mixes and some tracks that I've posted online before but not on the albums. There will be some tracks that's are just "bugfix" versions of tracks that got onto my albums with small mistakes in them that I just couldn't not fix because I'm such a perfectionist. There will also be some of what I've called "Crappy Rejected Tracks" that I made during the early, early cOOLdISC_aFTERmATH and Canadian Chocobo period (2006-2008) which I've remastered but which are still just barely listenable. The overall quality of this thing is not up to my normal standards so don't expect a real masterpiece but be patient. After Canadian Chocobo I had three albums planned: Chrono Tied, (which I'd planned before even cOOLdISC_aFTERmATH was finished) a Christian hip hop mixtape which eventually became, "It's Pronounced Forty-Two" and a Daft Punk mixtape. Now I have completed two out of the three, and this is only sort of a side project. Stick with me over the next year and Daft Punk will soon be playing at your house, your house.

Not entering the Catalyst contest

I've thought about it long and hard but I'm just not seeing anything in the stems for Linkin Park's "The Catalyst." They're just too minimalistic and don't have enough melody, to the point that adding some with Melodyne seems like a waste of time. So I guess I'm not entering. Records have been working with me to get full album art made for It's Pronounced "Forty Two" so we could re-release it with a bonus track: KJ-52's "Dear God" vs Rob Dougan's "Born Yesterday." I also made a few last minute tweaks to a couple of the other tracks that I think improve them slightly. This is the definitive final version.

I have now joined a netlabel called "Get Some! Records" that will help promote and distribute my tracks. As they're a netlabel and a non-commercial entity, I'm still technically an unsigned, independent artist ... netlabels aren't like real record labels, they're more like informal music releasing clubs. This one was started by some fellow Daft Punk fans over at TheDaftClub.com and there are many other talented people on it, though mostly in other genres than I have thus far explored. But I think this will be a good move for the future because of the new direction I'm going to be taking now that It's Pronounced Fourty Two is finally out the door.

Anyway, to welcome me to the label they made this cool graphic for their front page, based on the Canadian Chocobo album cover which is totally awesome.

I don't know how I could feel more welcomed than to see that awesomeness the first time I go to their site. :)

Brief rant:
I made this for me to listen to. But also because I think there's alot of talent in the Christian hip hop scene that ought to get more mainstream exposure.

If you want to hear more Christian mashups in the future, bug all Christian hip hop artists (especially Mars ILL) to release their acapellas! Instrumentals are a dime a dozen but Christian rap acapellas are hard to come by!

Something I Forgot:
I forgot to mention that the quote on track 7 is by C. S. Lewis from one of the few remaining recordings of the man's original voice on the radio.

Chrono Tied (2009)

Chrono Tied is a 2009 mashup album produced by DJ Nerd42 that puts the vocals from Fort Minor's 2005 album "The Rising Tied" over beats created by sampling the Chrono Trigger original soundtrack. (1995) After a three year development cycle, this project features over an hour of music. It has several original sample-based beats, but nine of the tracks on Chrono Tied are based on instrumentals from "The Chrono Trigger Mixtape" by Compromised. All tracks on the album were produced by DJ Nerd42 except track 20 which is a remix by Theory.

Chrono Trigger, published by Square in 1995, is the single best game ever released for the Super Nintendo (SNES) and also has one of the best, if not THE best video game soundtrack(s) of all time. Yasunori Mitsuda composed all the original Chrono Trigger tracks sampled here, except that Nobuo Uematsu composed "Underground Waterway" (can also be translated as "Sewer") and "Tyran Castle." (Which are here sampled in "Petrified in the Underground Sewer" and "Tyran in Stereo.")

Released in 2005, "The Rising Tied" is an album by the hip hop group Fort Minor, led by rapper Mike Shenoda of Linkin Park. The Fort Minor side project gave Shenoda more opportunity to create specifically hip hop music without needing to cater to the rock / nu metal side that was expected of a Linkin Park album. The Rising Tied instrumentals are truly great, and if you like this album, you should listen to the original Rising Tied instrumentals. It is worth noting that the Chrono Tied tempos do not all match the tempos heard on The Rising Tied. "Right Now Time Circuits" is particularly up-tempo compared to the original track. This was done purposefully.

What I've Divided is a set of two mashups created by DJ Nerd42 on June 20, 2009, featuring Linkin Park's newerish songs from the Transformers movies: "What I've Done" and "New Divide." The two songs are so extremely similar that they are almost the same song with different words. This combines the instrumental and acapella from the "New Divide" maxi single and the "What I've Done" audio from Guitar Hero World Tour.
